And the Bands Played On

The combined forces of the Manx Youth Band and Manx Concert Brass have
recently produced an excellent quality C.D., entitled And the Bands Played
On, which is now available through a number of outlets. The disc, on the
Amadeus label, contains a total of 16 tracks which range over the whole
spectrum of the bands repertoire. As one would expect, the music opens up
with the Bands signature tune Manx Youth written and conducted by Derek
Broadbent. The Bands M.D., Ian Clague M.B.E., then takes the baton to
conduct Philip Sparkes Concert Prelude, Concierto DArunjuez by
Rodrigo, Star Wars by John Williams, the traditional love song
Catari,Catari, I Dreamed a Dream by Schonberg, Borodins Polovotsian
Dances and Stardust by Hoagy Carmichael.

Derek Broadbent then conducts his own arrangement of To all the girls Ive
loved before which is followed by George Allens well known march Knight
Templar again conducted by Ian Clague. Ian continues to conduct the bands
for a further four pieces, Gordon Langfords arrangement of the haunting
The lark in the clear air, Lennon and McCartneys Ticket to ride, Pie
Jesu by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and I got rhythm by George Gershwin. Derek
Broadbent completes the musical conducting with the traditional
Londonderry Air and Fanfare and Soliloquy by Trevor Sharpe. Special
mention must be made of the soloists and duetists who play on the various
tracks. These are Flugal horn player, Lynsey Maddocks, Euphonium soloist,
Steven Dugdale, solo Trombone player, Stephen Maddocks, Euphonium and
Trombone duetists, Steven Dugdale and Stephen Maddocks, Solo tenor horn,
Kathryn Power, and Soprano Cornet and Flugal Duetists, Karen Mahood and
Suzanna Power.

May we be so bold as to express the belief that amongst the varied programme
there is something that will suit all tastes and that the disc would be a
welcome addition to everyones collection of music
