Yes

Fishing line works the best, but you have to tie a good knot to prevent it
from slipping.  Failing that buy a mechanical linkeage trombone.  People
mock that these cost a lot more money, but I have been on that contest stand
putting together a trombone with string and hope.  Please instrument makers
remove this acheles (sorry about spelling) heal from us down to earth
'sliders' and make linkeage the standard.
