Re: Owning instruments

In our band it makes a big difference. About 50% have their own and
almost in every case, the attitude shows in playing. I can get quite
upset about players with band instruments that maltreat them, or at
least dont maintain them (including polishing). Ive seen tuning
slides that wont move because the instrument has not been bathed in
FIVE YEARS!!!! Ive seen instruments dropped on their bells, with
commensurate result, because of poor maintenance and attitude to a
band horn. (I mean "horn" in the american sense, dear reader).

In almost every case (with one or two notable exceptions usually
associated with stupidity, incompetence or both) where the player owns
the instrument, the attitude to almost everything band-wise is far
more diligent. IMHO.

But then this "world owes me a living" attitude can get me quite wound
up. I know of no other hobby where the partake-ee (I invented the
word) doesnt have to fund the whole deal and yet expects the world to
owe them. And sorry to all those players of band horns that DO care
for their instruments. Its not you Im having a go at.

Good call Ivanhuke... I spose I'd better sit in my bunker
now...<grin> My band wont talk to me now I spect. Specially since I
copied this on their list...
