As a 'brass band audience member' and parent of a brass playing music student I find the discussion interesting. It seems to me there is far more to Brass Bands then the social activity of belonging to a group and the activity of playing an instrument to Performance Standard. There is behind the up front piece the whole experience of learning about the manufacture, history and enjoyment of the instruments themselves. Owning an instrument therefore can fall into the same league as a house or a car rather than seeing it as a tool provided by a club. We were delighted to recently visit Andre Bissonet at Instruments Musicaux Anciens in Paris and see a variety of historic brass instruments in fine working order. We added as a result a fine mid nineteenth century Ophicliede (Ancient Tuba) to the collection of instruments we are proud to own. So, whilst there are pluses and minuses on seeing instruments as a club resource, there is also pleasure in enjoying the instruments for what they are.
