Moving instruments

Shelley wrote...should players be happy to move around instruments 'for the
good of the band'

Then Mike wrote...To a degree, probably. Maybe trom to euph, euph\bari,
cornet\horn euph\bass
etc but nothing drastic like cornet to bass....

I don't think you can generalise! We had 2 new cornet players came to band
and pretty soon one was on Bb bass and the other on Eb bass! They are
definitely happier there than on cornet - both have a good sound and adapted
pretty quickly. One of our front row cornets was playing euph when I first
joined the band. Our euph player is a trombone player at heart, but he has
also played bass for us.

I myself moved from tenor horn to baritone for a year, then to flugel. I
would hate to move off flugel but I suppose i would if I had to. I think
there is a tradition in banding of people changing instruments "for the good
of the band" (otherwise why are we bothering with all this treble-clef-only
business??) Playing in the band is a hobby, and of course no-one should be
forced to change if they don't want to, but as long as the player concerned
really doesn't mind, and it doesn't happen too often, then why not? (All the
above moves were spread over 15 years!) Most of our players would move
around if need be.

Anyway, when it comes down to it, if you don't like it, you can always vote
with your feet!

PS I'm sober now!
