This is what Gareth Dudley had to say: I've played a couple of Courtois bones and I have to say that I hate them. They look horrible; they feel horrible and they don't play any better. The ones I have blown were out of tune (generally flat) and felt cheap. I'm used to a Conn 8H of many years vintage and a new Rath R4F - quite honestly the best bone I have ever played. Now lets start at the beginning, I think Troms are a very personal instrument. When I found myself with a little money to spend I put it toward a Trom (Like you do) Anyhow, I travailed around the Northwest and Yorkshire trying Troms, which include Yamaha, King, Bach Strad, Conn and then finally Courtois. I finally picked the best Trom for me which was a Courtois Bb/F. The Yamaha that I tried was very light and the trigger was nasty and noisy, the King 4B had a horrible spring at the top of the slide which was also irritating and the whole instrument just looked to big, the colour of the brass is NASTY. The Bach Strad was getting very near the quality I was looking for but again the trigger was noisy, but all in all the best I had tried up till then. The Conn, Well!! what is that string doing holding the trigger together? (Pass on that one) The trip to Fred Rhodes was next and another couple of hours playing in the back room until I settled on the instrument that I love to play. Just the right weight for me the trigger is a Hagmann Valve so that's the best system (same on the Rath Troms) and my Trom is unique as it is in full silver, not a bit of brass on it!! I don't think anybody has the right to say this is or that's rubbish as we all have our own tastes and different ways of blowing, so it is my opinion that people looking for an instrument should look around for an instrument that suits them and not what is in fashion at the time. Best Wishes ROB --
