I have yet to find a piece of music which any capable musician can't play at a reasonably sensible tempo. To be told that I must play a piece at a set tempo removes a major element of musical interpretation from the performance and relegates the conductor to the position of time - keeper. You might as well give a list of dynamic marks in decibels and go the whole hog! Why use Italian tempo markings at all if you are simply going to dictate the tempo scientifically? I can do all that on the computer. It prints beautifully, but it's not a musician. I don't mind a circa marking for those incapable of working it out for themselves (are there really any band conductors THAT bad?) but please allow some artistic interpretation. Sorry to keep being antagonistic on this group, but some issues just make me mad. There are so many superb players in the brass band world and yet so many amateur attitudes - just because we don't get paid doesn't mean we can't at least try to be professional in our approach.
