Re: remove old laque

We're getting a little off topic for a brass band list, so I'll keep it
brief.
Acids don't seem to do much to lacquer. Paint strippers like Nitromors
sometimes work. A tank of strong caustic soda solution ( sodium hydroxide )
will usually do the trick. TAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS!!! I am going to
experiment soon by applying a small electric current while the instrument is
in the caustic soda. I will let you know what happens!
Sometimes the only way is to rub the lacquer away with abrasive paper
(400-600 grit) and then restore the brass to a factory finish using tripoli
and rouge. Which ever method you choose you should have the means of
re-finishing the brass...just in case.

Good luck,

Andy
