Dear all, Why do people think that going to all the local contests automatically gives them more of a right to promotion than a band that goes to the area with the aim of winning and manages to do that, thus achieving, or being well on the way to, promotion. My band, Old Hall Brass, does not contest as much as some other bands as we prefer to concentrate on improving the band through hard work in practice and by stretching the band with demanding concerts. We have been promoted from 4th section to 2nd within 4 years. We don't attend many local contests for a variety of reasons i.e. the band don't feel that this would be too beneficial, the band don't have the time due to a demanding concert schedule and the prize money is often not enough to make attending such contests a sound financial decision. In the future we may make an effort to attend more but that is our decision and the results on the day will reflect if our approach is the correct one. I am not decrying local contests as it is each bands decision to enter and the only way to win contests is to enter them!!! but I agree that the area contest is the best way of deciding grading as this is the contest that most band will put the effort into and generally has the highest attendance. Best Wishes John Sud ( I've a lot to say for myself today!!!!) --
