Re: Rhapsody in Brass

Hi Alan.....

There is a wonderful book on Sir Dean Goffin's life and music that is worth getting.

It's called "Symphony Of Thanksgiving" by Cyril R. Bradwell.
It is published by the New Zealand and Fiji Territory of The Salvation Army
204 Cuba Street, Wellington, New Zealand
I'm sure you can buy it at most Salvation Army trade departments.

I paraphrase.....
According to the book in March 1942, as a lieutenant in the military, Dean Goffin
wrote "Rhapsody For Brass" while the conductor of the Fourth Brigade Band (brass)
during a period in Syria. The first public performance was August 25, 1942 in
Cairo. He sent it to Eric Ball and it was published in 1948 by R Smith and Company
. In 1943 he wrote a full orchestral version of it as well. In 1949 it was selected
as the test piece at the 97th British Open Brass Band Championships at Belle Vue,
Manchester.

I would love to hear the orchestral version.

I hope this helps.
