[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] Politics / Comments from a lurker
Hi All,
If we're going to have internal band politics on the
list can we hear all of it or none of it, rather than
a vague "poor so and so" or "they did him wrong" or
similar crammed in the middle of an email, which is
only understood by a knowing few. I like good gossip
as much as the next guy, so spill the beans!! :)
Jokes aside, the trouble is you only get half the
story and can be left with an unfair impression of
people. I remember hearing remarks about one conductor
being treated badly by a band, a great talent, some of
the band left with him they thought so highly of him.
The other side of the story was the conductor in
question moved from band to band with his group of
cronies, and had already collapsed one band and
crippled another. (Anyone else notice that you don't
hear so much about splits in bands when poor old Joe
Bloggs on cornet gets the boot?) There are some
wonderful chaps out there conducting, but also some
right so and so's who seem to be conferred with the
status of a minor deity by their worshippers and so
excused from all forms of bad behaviour towards the
band. Yes, sometimes conductors are treated very badly
and forced to leave, but in time I've seen more than
one band harmed by Messiah-like conductors and their
entourage of wandering minstrals .
I hate politics and when I join a band, I join that
band and not a personality cult for any individual. If
I leave, I hope for a proper reason and on good terms,
but never sheepishly following someone else as some
seem to.
This is not a swipe at any person or band on this
list, I know very few personally. Just comments lately
reminded me of comments and scenarios I've seen and
heard far too often in bands. And there's usually more
than one side to the story.
