Leidzen also used mutes very effectively even in solo accompaniments which is one
of the licks which made them so effective.

Did None Other Name with Earlscourt on a trip to Cinncinnati when they were between
conductors. The cornet solo may be the loveliest bit of writing in SA literature
although The Call comes close. I loved to luxuriate in the solo in NOTN and in
rehearsal, Bill Gibson on solo cornet asked if I was going to play it that slowly.
My reply was that it might be even slower. Next go through Bill decided to take it
at his tyempo while I laughed at him but on the job we did it my way. Most band
conductors seem afraid or unwilling to stretch the music both tempo and dynamic
wise, a real fault in the NABBA bands I have heard.

Saw an old friend of yours last week - Dave Robinson-Cooke. He is the
brother-in-law of Cliff Hunt who unfortunately is not going to be with us much
longer and we met at the hospital. We spent most of the time telling Dick Holz and
Al Swenarton stories. I don't think any bands have as much fun as we used to but
maybe my memory exaggerates.

Regards.

Dave.
