Hi Chris,
We are pretty much the same here in Guernsey. If we wish to go
out "busking", then we have to apply for permission to the
Constables of whichever Parish we decide to play in. The
permission does not cost, and I have never been turned down in the
past.
If we are joining in an organised event, such as late night
shopping in St Peter Port or St Sampson's, then the organisers of
those events obtains a blanket license to cover all performers.
We did these open evenings for a couple of years, but I found we
were standing in the freezing cold streets, sometimes hissing down
with rain, holding out a bucket and going home soaked for about
£20...... Not anymore, we now entertain at official Christmas
functions, and actually agree a fee prior to the event, (at least
£150, dependent on how many of the band turn out).
We have found this to be very successful. We have less engagements
throughout December, but for a more profitable return.
Some evenings we perform at 3 or 4 events, so it is certainly
worth the effort to the band. In fact, this December is paying for
the band to attend the Whit marches next June.
(sings) "Oh I wish it could be Christmas every day".......
All the best,
Simon.
