Re: Re: Arranging & "having it upstairs"

Hi David.....

The only "non SA" brass band piece that Erik Leidzen had published was
"Sinfonietta" as far as I know of however, he did many beautiful
arrangements
of Bach Preludes and Fugues from the "Well -tempered Clavichord" which
are still in manuscript. He also did "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring" and "Rondo
alla Turka" which are also in manuscript. Another one that comes to mind is
the Mozart Fantasia in the Italian Style. (I believe that's the correct
title.) He
did one or two movements of the Grieg Piano Concerto for brass band
(including the piano) and Grieg's Homage March (Sigurd Jorsalfar) . He
rescored his "1st and 2nd Swedish Rhapsodies" from wind band to brass
band as well. I think there may be a few others also. He said he did the
Preludes and Fugues as exercises. These are real gems. Many of them have
never been played. Each year at Star Lake Musicamp he would bring a
different fugue. He had a special understanding for the music
of Bach and Grieg.

Of course many of you know the great marches and solos that Erik Leidzen
wrote for the Salvation Army. He also wrote wonderful meditations like
"Sweet Hour of Prayer." He was a powerful influence on many well known
composers and arrangers over the years.

Here's a list of some of his published marches and solos.

MARCHES
Stockholm I (published when he was 14 years old) (GS)
Pressing Onward (FS)
In The King's Service (GS)
Fling Wide The Gates (FS)
Invincible Army (GS)
Steadily Onward (FS)
On The King's Highway (NYBJ)
Manhattan (NYBJ) (originally called Purity)

SOLOS
At The Cross - cornet (FS) (I think it's also called Happy All the Day)
A Happy Day - cornet (FS)
Tucker - cornet (FS)
Wondrous Day - cornet (FS) (written for Roland Cobb - ISB)
Songs In The Heart - cornet (FS) (written for Derek Smith - NYSB)
Beautiful Christ - cornet (NYBJ) (written for Derek Smith)
Speak My Lord - cornet (NYBJ) (written for Derek Smith)
The Old Rustic Bridge - Eb horn (FS) (written for Howard Chesham - CSB)
A Never Failing Friend - trombone (FS)
Concertina For Band and Trombone (FS) (written for Maisie Wiggins)
Song of the Brother - euphonium (FS)
Home on the Range - euphonium (NYBJ) (written for Bob McNally -NYSB)
This was later rescored for the Festival Series by RS-A?

The Cleansing Stream - Eb & Bb cornet duet (FS)

He also wrote several cornet trios one of which is:

The Trumpeters - ct. trio (manuscript arr. Mark Freeh)

I'm sure I must have left something out. Dave Buckley may have something
to add. The reason I listed these marches and solos is that they can be
used very effectively with non SA bands. For example, Song of the Brother
uses the tune When You and I Were Young Maggie and The Cleansing Stream is
Listen to the Mockingbird.

Sorry this e-mail is so long but I thought it was all important to mention.

I hope it helps David...

Regards,

Mark
