I've always been intrigued by the rotary/piston question.
In Australia, UK, US orchestras: rotary tubas, rotary French horns, piston
trumpets.
In orchestras on the continent: rotary (?) tubas, piston French horns,
rotary trumpets.
In brass bands: piston tubas, piston tenor horns, piston cornets.
If there's any technical reason for all of this, I've never seen it.
As a French horn and tenor horn player, I much prefer the rotary valves of
my French horn.
