I believe it was the use of the piston valves on the family of 'Saxhorns'
which made them attractive to the Brass bands in the nineteenth century.
These bands were primarily from works backgrounds, with mills and mines
setting up works bands and the brass instruments were the most durable. The
rotary valves I presume came more from the orchestral field as on the French
Horns.
David Lancaster has written on this subject, perhaps you can enlighten us
further.
George.
PS Seasons greetings to all you good people out there in Cyberland.
