> Pardon me if I get this wrong, but wouldn't Bach have been writing for > 'Clarino' trumpets? Yes. Absolutely. It was certainly some sort of natural brass instrument, and I think the original manuscript calls it "tromba" which literally translates as trumpet. It's just that Brandenburg 2 is written for an instrument in F rather than the more common D or C trumpets, and the physical requirements needed to play this particular trumpet part are far far greater than in anything else in Bach's output. Deciding just what this was played on is a well explored musicological point...and well off topic for a brass band list too! I wish I had kept out of it.
