Perhaps NABBA has a solution to this dilemma. In addition to the Championship, Honors (i.e., Section 1), and Challenge (i.e., Section 2) Sections, the annual contest includes an Open Section for bands that do not subscribe to strict, traditional BB instrumentation, and an Exhibition Section which is non-contesting, has no prizes, but is adjudicated at the contest. This affords a beginning band the opportunity for valuable comments from the judges, and the performance experience in front of an audience of discerning brass enthusiasts.
