The problems faced by under-strength bands *should* be considered by the music-choosers to an extent. Choosing a piece that requires three distinct percussionists and an array of expensive instruments is simply thoughtless and tantamount to cutting hard-pressed bands out of it altogether. On the other hand I don't agree that full bands should be asked to play ensemble music. There is a much better way of tackling this problem. The most useful thing that could be done to encourage under-strength bands to compete would be to allow them to borrow 4 or 5 players from other bands. This has worked extremely well in the SCABA contests for a number of years, and the idea has now been copied by the Bucks BBA contest at Aylesbury.
