"Tried and true" was maybe a bit glib. I've got no problem with modern music - it's using brand new music that I've got problems with. The music must be of a difficulty that pretty much every band in the grade can have a go at it, and not feel ashamed of the result, while the top bands in the grade will obviously make a much better fist of it. The only way to know this is to use music that has been "tested" by equivalent bands - not to use newly commissioned music. Can't say that I agree with you that the only difference between an A section and a D section band should be the technical and musical abilities of the players. The members will probably be younger and will certainly be less experienced. The band will probably not be as well resourced, and will have a much narrower "comfort zone". While it's fine to stretch the comfort zone a bit, it's important not to move right outside it. We obviously have different feelings about the augmenting of percussion sections for a contest. My feeling is that you should contest with your normal band, including percussion.
