Sorry Keith, Maybe I'm being a bit thick here, after all I am a trombonist. Eric Ball et al, knew the Brass Band Instrumentation and indeed wrote accordingly. Organisers as well when they are selecting can't choose a piece, and then think "Hang on, Strudwick Truss Works Band haven't got a sop, better not have that piece." The Composers are told to write in the brass idiom, with the instrumentation to hand. Once would hope that the music can be used at different contests, not necessarily the Areas or the Finals for that matter. The venue is irrelevant. Simon Dobson wrote a 4th section test piece, and it is a cracker, and in my honest opinion (not the band I play for I add) far better that the Championship one. It is not his fault, or problem in fact if Bands struggle to attract players for whatever reasons, he writes a 4th section piece, for brass band instrumentation. Likewise the powers that be have to be impartial and choose pieces, for the set instrumentation that is gospel to us all, not cater for the unfortunate bands that struggle. If we start imposing embargoes on new compositions because of player shortages, then we run the risk of being reactive to the problems we have in our movement, rather than be proactive to the problems namely player shortages. Find a way to get players in, and play the pieces written for us, not change the pieces to cut the "new" cloth so to speak. Another minor point, a lot of discussion has gone on the 4th section and player shortages. Well the same problem exists in ALL sections. My band was down to 6 players in the summer and now have a full band, bar a few minor changes. I know 2 Midlands based 1st section bands that are still looking intentely for cornets. It happens at every level. Best of luck to all at the area, and for those at the NEMBBA association on Sunday, I shall willing to espouse my theories to all, for the price of a pint the excellent Bass bitter they sell at the Rolls Royce Club. Take care all.
