You don't say if your son's been playing for a while or if he's just
starting out.

Sop is a fantastic instrument (and counting lots of rests rarely comes into
it these days) but in my opinion not one for the beginner due to the
physical demands of the instrument.  The danger is that he could develop bad
habits to compensate for lack of lip strength and it could prove impossible
to reverse these later.  With good tuition and a patient student you never
know though...
