As Chairman of the London & Southern Counties Regional Committee, I fully agree with, and support, our Secretary, Dave Hobbs, in his reply concerning the Stevenage Arts & Leisure Centre. Yes, Watford was satisfactory and we all got used to it but venues and their facilities change. A number of the key facilities became no longer available to us and we had to search for a new venue. Basildon was the alternative but that venue closed, at no notice whatsoever, and so we had to look again. The Arts & Leisure Centre at Stevenage was investigated and found to be satisfactory for a band contest and it is as near central to the region as one can get. I must add that David and I travelled many miles in search of the venue and others have been investigated since. Regarding the squash courts, bands at least have a room inside the building in which to assemble before signing on and playing. It is not regarded as a room for socialising in. We do ask bands to be as quiet as possible whilst they are assembled in the squash courts-you would be surprised what liberties can be taken-or would you? As for disqualifying a noisy band: it is not in the contesting rules and the possibility of taking such action has never been discussed or considered at Committee level. I am not aware of any band being threatened with such action.
