John The thing is that the physical demands of sop are greater than say 2nd cornet, especially when you're starting out. Get the basics right, build a strong embouchure and the future's rosy, but spend a year mashing your lips because that's the only way you can play above the stave and you'll cause long term problems. In my mind the soprano cornet demands more of a player than virtually any other instrument. As it's unlikely that a beginner's going to have a top of the range sop, the vagaries of the cheaper instruments will also be thrust on them and to expect a beginner to sort out the dodgy intonation that's inherent in all sops (even the Schilke) is unrealistic and probably downright unfair. Take a couple of years on a Bb to build strength, train the ear and develop technique then think about sop.
