Oh, I've only just seen the rest of your question!

Orchestral playing is different to brass playing in that its very much sectional playing.  Listening to the rest of the section - either just the trombones, or the whole brass section, following the style of the leader, balancing volumes, all things that brass band sections should do, but many don't.

Oh, and deafening the bassoons is also obligatory.  Particularly for the bass trombone - the contrabassoon is your target in Mahler.
