This really isn't so unusual.  Ever since we've had music publishers they have been telling composers what to do!  Anyone who reads the correspondence between (say) Brahms and Simrock would recognise the extent to which publishers have influenced what composers do.  Boosey's renaming of a few marches by Hall (and more particularly Zehle) seems to pale into insignificance by comparison.

And yes, I'm sure that composers would sooner have their works published and played.  Mozart made band arrangements of the best tunes from his operas since he recognised that it was a simple and quick way to get his music into people's ears.
