Hi there once again fellow listees, Took the opportunity to see my ex colleagues from GUS, (whoops, sorry, Travelsphere Holidays Band), on Saturday night who were playing in Rugby. Actually, I went to the concert specifically to hear the guest soloist for the evening David Daws. Was it worth it or what! I heard Enfield Band play a few years ago at St. John's Smith Square and thought what a fantastic band they were, ably led by Bandmaster Richard Phillips, and made a mental note that if ever they came within distance I'd go and hear them. Well.....Enfield didn't but I'm glad David Daws at last has as the guest of Travelsphere Band. He needs no plaudit's from me but I have to say WOW, what a fantastic player, the geezer has it all - in spades. Seven solos played with style and panache, chop's that seem inexhaustible, a technique to dream of and all played from memory! There were moments when the band could hardly stay with him, but he never lost his cool or composure. What a star. Russel Grey, the Band's Professional MD said of him, "......I don't think I ever heard such a consistently high standard of performance all night long". High praise indeed There are many new faces in the band, and some tried and trusted ones not there any more, but, already Resident Conductor Richard Philips is having a positive effect on the sound of the band which at this rate will soon be emulating that rich, warm sonorous sound of their predecessors of the 1960's. Highlight of the evening from the band was a new composition from the pen of Richard Phillips called Metamorphosis. To your humble listener it was a delight to listen to and had tunes that Eric Ball could have moved you with as well as a central cadenza section that Vinter pioneered.
