RE: oldest player

Sharon,

I've mentioned this to the list once before but some years ago my band had
the privilege of having a 100 year old gentleman named Stan Prior playing on
2nd cornet.
The year we won the national B grade championships, Stan was 96 and received
a standing ovation at a special presentation after the results were
announced. He played on stage with the band at a concert when he was 100
and passed away at 102.

He said that music was what kept him alive. Throughout his 80s and 90s he
used to make us laugh by saying he was off to entertain the "old folks" in
the nursing homes, which he did by playing the piano, cello, cornet and
singing.

Stan was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most
durable bandsman and had a TV programme made about him.

You can tell Fred he still has a long playing career ahead of him if he
follows Stan's example.
