Until about 15 months ago I was playing cornet regularly with a brass band, in addition to playing trumpet with a couple of orchestra. I was playing a silver plated Besson Sovereign B flat (not sure of the model - 926 maybe?) with a Denis Wick 4B. The instrument belonged to the band, so I returned it when I resigned (but the mouthpiece was my own). I quite fancy getting myself a cornet now. I might occasionly play as a guest with my old band or other bands, as indeed I have in the last 15 months (albeit playing trumpet, which is not ideal). There are also some orchestral parts calling for cornet. I would be looking for a used professional model shepherd's crook style cornet. I could go for a Besson Sovereign, which is pretty much the standard for British brass bands, but I have to say I was never particularly happy with it (and I've played more than one). It was a nice enough instrument, and it sounded okay, but I found it stuffy, especially in the upper register, and the valves were clunky. The third valve slide had a trigger with a finger ring rather than a flat lever, which was particularly difficult to operate. So ideally I'm looking for something else. I'm quite tempted by a Yamaha Maestro. Any comments on this cornet? Will it fit in well in a section dominated by Sovereigns? What is a fair price for a good, used Maestro (in the UK)?
