I've always found that the best way is to take the instrument apart and place in a bath of warm water and washing up liquid. Leave to soak for a few minutes, if it's really nasty then you can but a wire brush cleaner through it as purchased at music stores. Then dry thoroughly with a soft tea towel or duster, apply slide grease and valve oil, play for 15 minutes or until all the water has passed through and you'll have a shiny new looking instrument at very little cost.
