Ron Good question. For me, having one (or preferably more) recordings accelerates and enriches the learning process. When preparing a piece to conduct I like to consider as many options as possible to help me to crystalise my ideas about a piece; one way to do this is to compare my own interpretative ideas with those of others. Very often it's a matter of learning from their mistakes, but sometimes a conductor will do something special that I haven't read from the score. I don't believe that there is only one perfect interpretation of a piece of music, rather that there are an infinite number of possibilities. In that sense a recording or live performance is at least as 'valid' as are the notes on the printed page. I use recordings to try and learn about some of those possibilities.
