Thanks for your kind words - I wish you'd said hello at Buxton!  I saw Martyn but didn't click that you might be there.

Its always good to be reminded that music is the sounds not the dots on the paper, and that in order to realise the composer's intentions we need to use our ears as well as our eyes...  'Its only a guide' has become a bit of a mantra at Harrogate, especially amongst players of wrong notes and a conductor who likes to meddle with another composer's handiwork!

The more time I spend conducting, the more I realise that what I hear at band can be very subjective - it's possible to subconsciously 'filter out' the things that I don't want to hear.  Listening to a recording is a much more objective experience, though I still hear different things as my familiarity with the work increases.

I should have added that I actually quite enjoy listening to music - I don't only listen in order to help us win the next contest!  But really - any excuse will do.
