In the US, "copyright" means that the copyright owner has the right to profit from sales of the published work or recordings of that published work. It says nothing about the actual content of the performance. In other words, the composer cannot control instrumentation, additions, or subtractions from their work as long as the rights to the performance were legally obtained and proper royalties were paid. Copyright has to do with getting paid, not with controlling the use of your work - as many, many composers have discovered through the years. It may not be ethical or correct to modify a composition, but it is not illegal. I don't know the details of the British copyright acts, but I don't believe that they are substantially different. In regards to recordings, hearing recordings of pieces can be a useful aid when a band is new to a piece. However, the conductor must be very careful that differences he may wish to make in the interpretation of the piece are not overridden by adherence to the "right way" as shown by a recording. >Aaron Lloydd wrote: "I take your point that there's any number of different >interpretations of any piece of music BUT to say that adding percussion not >written by the composer is one of them is incorrect.
