Some time ago the only carol that could be sung in church was "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night". The text was sent around parishes all over the country and many local tunes were then adapted to the words. There are apparently at least 100 known settings of this carol. This setting has about 8 of them.
There is an optional choral part for an SATB to join in with the last verse, the melody known as "Old Fosters".
As recorded by The New England Brass Band on their CD, Christmas Joy.
