The Dies Irę forms part of Belioz's massive Requiem Mass for large
orchestra and choir. The orchestra includes four extra brass ensembles and large
timpani forces.
This arrangement has been written with championship section bands in mind,
not because of the technical difficulty but because of the independence of many
of the parts through sections such as J.
It would be most appropriate for a grand massed band concert, with one band being used
for the majority of the piece and the extra forces being brought into action
from J to N and from Q to bar 237. This would work especially for extra cornets,
trombones and percussion through those sections. Using trumpets (Bb
and Eb) to double the cornet lines in those sections is
acceptable, though be sure to ensure that balance is maintained either by
doubling all the cornet lines (including soprano) or none.
You can listen to an MP3 of a Garritan Personal
Orchestra rendition of the piece.
