DO NOT DELETE THIS MESSAGE - you will need to refer to it to get the best out of the brass band mailing list, and I may refer to it in future correspondence with you. It will help you to get the most out of membership of the list. Welcome to the brass band area of the Internet! You have joined a group of nearly 500 players and followers of the brass band movement. To make your life in the group easier, along with other members of the group and mine, I have put together this e-mail. It's long because it contains wisdom brought together over the more than two years that the group has been going. I suggest you scan the mail to know what's in it, then if you have any more questions you can read the specific point in more detail. If you've seen it before still give it a quick scan, new items are being added all of the time. This mail is sent to all new users, and periodically to all existing users. Contents: A. Do's and Don'ts B. Adverts C. Vacancy List D. Situations Wanted E. Deputies List F. Professional Cards G. FAQ Last change: 27/5/04 A. Do's and Don'ts ================== "The Provider" means Nigel Horne, NJH Music and all of the employees of NJH Music and Wharfedale Computers Ltd. both past and present. The Provider is providing this mailing list as a service to the community as a place for the interchange of constructive ideas and opinions. Please make your postings in that light. You agree that you are solely liable for your the contents of your postings to the Brass Band Mailing List or any other service provided by The Provider. You further agree to indemnify and hold The Provider harmless from any claim or damage that may arise from those postings. You grant The Provider the right to redistribute postings made to The Brass Band Mailing List or to delete those postings. The Provider reserves the right to make minor editorial correction to postings to improve the readability of postings. The Provider reserves the right to incorporate postings into its archives. The provider reserves the right to revoke registration within The Brass Band Mailing List or to revoke a user's posting privileges. More specifially: 1) All articles to be relevant to followers of the banding scene. If you're a violin, clarinet, trumpet player or play another non-brass band instrument, or if you don't play a musical instrument at all you are still of course welcome, however please be careful to keep your posting on subject. If you're unsure what a brass band is either mail the keeper or browse the entry for brass bands in the Oxford Dictionary of music. 2) Absolutely no flaming. Although political correctness is easily taken too far, please remember that your posting will be read by people all over the world who may have vary different backgrounds to you. 3) Articles for submission should be sent to brass-band@bandsman.co.uk. It is important that you send the command from the address you originally subscribed from, Cable and Wireless customers should note that because of a fault with their system you may find this impossible - change your ISP or use Hotmail. Some mailers, such as Microsoft mail, send replies to brass-band-approval@bandsman.co.uk, ensure that if you have such software that you amend the address when using the reply option to post. 4) Signatures to be no more than 4 lines or include any graphics. 5) Any quotes should be at the *top*, not the bottom, of responses and shouldn't be more than 33% of the posting size. Putting quotes at the bottom is difficult to read on text based software with no page back, you read the background of an article after the article itself! Better still, quote in context. 6) All listproc commands are sent to majordomo@bandsman.co.uk. To unsubscribe send a message with the subject 'unsubscribe' to brass-band-request@bandsman.co.uk To change your address send the message set brass-band address new-address For further information on the list, including information on how to unsubscribe, change your address, and how to receive the list in digest format, send a mail to "majordomo@bandsman.co.uk" containing the single word HELP in the body. If you do intend to change address it's important that you find out how to set about it BEFORE you change. 7) All submissions are archived. For information e-mail "listproc@bandsman.co.uk" containing the word INDEX in the body. Archives are also available via the Brass Band Portal, see below. Because of Demons 'banduse' policy, would users without a Demon account should use the off-line archive except when fast access is needed. A copy of all archives is also available on CD-ROM. See rule 30 for a discussion covering copyright. 8) Any bounced mail items and I'll have to remove you. So that it's not without notice I'll let your postmaster know. If you suddenly stop getting messages please contact me because I may have had to remove you and failed to find\guess the name of anyone at your site to let you know what I'm doing. 9) If you're going away on a long holiday or your machine's name is about to be renamed, or anything is likely to happen which may cause some difficulty getting the mail through to you please unsubscribe. You can always resubscribe later and access, via the listproc address, any items you may have missed. To temporarily stop all messages use the command set brass-band mail postpone end and to start receiving again, use the command set brass-band mail ack end 10)Feel free to contact the list keeper njh@bandsman.co.uk, for any reason. 11)To avoid confusion please keep to the following names for the instruments: Tenor Horn, Baritone, Euphonium and Bass, not Alto Horn, Tenor Horn, Baritone and Tuba. 12)Feel free to send a message of introduction to the list. 13)listproc@bandsman.co.uk is an automatic mailboxes, so don't try to enter into a conversation with it! 14)Do not enable 'return-receipt-to:', or 'confirm-reading-to' headers or anything similar when posting to the list, the confirmations will often be posted to the list rather than to you and I have to stop them going out by hand. 15)The WWW page for this list at http://www.bandsman.co.uk. If your band runs a WWW page contact me for cross reference details. The home page includes a search engine that spiders all known brass band sites, and includes a feature allowing you to find what's been updated recently on those sites. 16)Rules about advertising: The only advertising which is allowed unmoderated is for concerts and contests taken out by bands or private individuals. Indeed adverts for these are positively encouraged. There is a separate page for instruments for sale and wanted at http://www.bandsman.co.uk/sale.htm. If you have a different advert, run it past me first. There is a diary folder for concert announcements at http://www.bandsman.co.uk/cgi-bin/events/db.pl?db=events, and a professional cards service on the brass band portal. Companies wishing to advertise should contact njh@bandsman.co.uk, the list and portal are open to offers of sponsorship. This does not relate to CompuServe's customers who are bound by section 7.1(c) of their terms. All adverts must relate to Brass Bands. In case you wonder why this heavy stuff is in, to be blunt I'm not impressed by people making money from my time, efforts and phone bill. 17)If you have something to say, say it! Don't just lurk or post it on your WWW page saying 'look at my page for some important information'. 18)I do this out of the goodness of my heart. I do it in my spare time - it isn't my job; I don't get much money for it - quite this opposite I am left out of pocket because of it. Therefore: 'my word is final'. A lot of people interested in brass bands pass through this list, so if you're interested in sponsoring the site drop Nigel Horne a line. 19)Eudora "lite" users: I suggest you change your mailer, you're in for a rough ride on the Internet with it and your first rough experiences will start here! 20)Some modern e-mail programs are capable of sending pretty text formats such as bold, underline, different fonts and pictures. These are fun to send to people, but they confuse computer software that can only handle simple textual commands. When sending any e-mail to ...@bandsman.co.uk you must send in 'plain text format' not 'HTML format', 'rich text format' or 'MIME format'. For details of how to do this either refer to your software's manual, to your ISP or network administrator. 21)Please avoid "me too" messages - they're very tedious for everyone else. Also don't hide behind false names or anonymous postings. Apart from being bad manners it just looks silly and detracts from your posting as people focus on who you are not on what you're saying. 22)No adverts for players in bands, or requests to play in a band. These are covered in this mail, the monthly Usenet posting and on the web. 23)All warnings (nearly always hoaxes) about viruses will be stopped. Before even thinking about posting a note about viruses look at http://kumite.com/myths/. It is YOUR responsibility that you do not post mail worms or viruses to the list. If you post to an item to the list that contains a mail worm, virus or other malicious software, you will be removed immediately, even if you do so unwillingly. I suggest that you download FREE virus protection software from www.complex.is, or better still use an operating system such as Linux that does not suffer from viruses. 24)No postings should be made with binary attachments such as pictures, background stationary or programs. 25)The language of the list is Standard English. 26)Please do not post "deputies wanted" or "players required" requests to the list, see below. 27)Do not enable "out of office" messages to be posted to the list. 28)Keep the password given to you when you subscribe. 29)About copyright: All material posted to the Brass Band Mailing List remains the property of the original author. All articles are archived and the archives are publicly accessible from the World Wide Web. Should you wish to republish or redistribute any articles from the list, contact the author for permission. Please cite The Brass Band Mailing List as the original publisher when republishing these articles. Do not post copyrighted material, such as news articles from the web or other publications, without permission from the copyright holder. Paraphrasing, brief quotes and pointers to articles of interest are OK. B.
