Swingin' and Dancin' is a book of numbers specially chosen and
arranged by Peter Younghusband as a selection of solos for use with a piano.
The book comes free with a copy of his second selection, With Apologies.
The books are available either for trumpet/cornet/flugel or
euphonium/baritone/trombone with piano, please specify which when ordering.
The books would also work very well for reed instruments, clarinets and
saxophones.
Swingin' and Dancin'
All of these solos were written for students of Peter's whilst he was
teaching in Karratha. Karratha is in the remote North West of Western Australia,
about 1000 miles North of Perth. The town is home to about 10,000 people and
does not have a big music culture. As such, he sent some of his students to
Perth to further their music education when the time was right. Some of these
solos were 'presents' to those that left town. The solos are aimed at students
of around Grade 5 standard, are fun to play and enjoyable to audiences.
With Apologies
Students often want to play tunes that they are familiar with. Whilst this
may be considered as not always good practice, it's also important to nurture
young musicians and keep them interested. These solos have been designed so that
whilst the tunes will be familiar, they are not exactly how one might expect. It
is important to follow the music carefully and 'Play with your eyes not your
ears.' Whilst enjoying the familiarity of the tunes, the arrangements also
encourage students to develop wider musicianship skills.
