With regard to your suggestion of making contests more 'public friendly', the following idea may be worthy of mention. Although it was a contest, socialising and a good time were well and truly catered for. The 1998 Queensland Brass Band Championships held in Rockhampton over the Easter period included a Light Entertainment Contest for lower grade bands. The setting was a large function room at the local Rugby League Club, and was held on a Saturday afternoon. 20 bands participated, with music generally being of a light, well known nature. In addition, some of the bands had included dancers and skits to enhance the entertainment. Adjudication was by one adjudicator sitting immediately in front of the band, and no music was provided to him... entertainment value only was judged. A bar was situated within the venue, and a large audience attended, many of whom did not have any connection with the bands participating. There was no pressure at any time for the audience to keep seated or quiet. A trade stand was located outside the main entrance. The competitors and audience all had a great time, and hopefully this type of event will recur in future contests.
