This is probably true. They might be steered towards an overture like Nabucco or even something a bit more "heavyweight". However, there is a huge jump from what an ordinary punter would consider "serious" music to something like Wilby or Graham. A park-going listener would love the Floral Dance, would probably cope with the overture from Prince Igor, but would have a lot of trouble dealing with anything more demanding. Even my mum (who is a singer and pianist) has to leave the room when a brass band test-piece comes on...
