There is no single piece of writing as poignant as the cornet solo "Jesus is the Sweetest Name I Know" with its counterpoint writing. Leading the old Earlscourt Band in this piece, their then solo cornet player, Bill Gibson, asked me in rehearsal if I intended to play it as slowly as I was practicing it. My reply was, "It may be even slower". My single favourite piece of writing ever. The sentiment expressed, and Erik Leidzen was a very sentimental man, is quite irrelevant to the beauty of the writing. I must confess I am enjoying these conversations with old friend Mark Freeh. I hope the rest of you are not too bored. Dave. I > later became Johnny Richard's copiest.
