Hi, Valved trombones were banned around the turn of the last century because Arthur O Pierce, the famous euphonium soloist of Black Dike (original spelling) Mills band won the Euph and Trombone medals at a contest during the same performance, he used a valve trombone in the trombone solo. This was regarded as unfair. I'm sure that you could get away with it nowadays. it might be worth having a look at the contest rules well in advance, just to put your mind at rest.
