Actually, I'm surprised that this is the first plug that they've got out of this thread; the music scene at Warwick is vibrant and highly organised, with regular performances from a wide variety of groups (19 at last count, I think, which doesn't include any of the random pop groups about on the campus) which, apart, from the brass band, include the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Orchestra (unauditioned), Symphonic Wind Ensemble (auditioned small wind orchestra), Big Band (unauditioned), Symphonic Brass Ensemble (unauditioned brass 10+ piece), Brass Quintet, and various other small brass groups to fit student demand (I played in both Trombone and Tuba quartets while I was there), plus others; these are simply the ones that cover most brass players. The brass band (shortly to be promoted to the 2nd section Nationally) owes it's existence to perseverance and organisation mostly - it was begun, I think, in 1994 by a few hardcore brass band fans, and grew from there, gradually attracting the banders on campus until, in my first year (97-98), it was registered as a 4th section band with a full quota of players. We won the 4th section Areas that year, and the 3rd section Areas last year (though we didn't acquit ourselves as we would have wished at the Nationals either year, due to the rehearsal problems of them coming right at the start of the academic year - each contest was entered on a week's intensive rehearsal, no more). It would be perfectly feasible for other Universities to follow suit; we just seem to have been the first to get organised (due in no small part to the dedication and diligence of the conductor, Mac, himself an ex-student). In summation, Warwick is highly recommended if you wish to continue making music (at any level) during your time at University - you don't have to go out of your way to find as much as you could wish; it's handed to you on a plate! Academically, it's also pretty highly rated, combining the best of both worlds. Dave Taylor Warwick Uni 1997-2000 (now with Kidlington) Professional Sycophant --
