Steve Good comments Perhaps if more brass band players arranged or composed or understood the processes there would be less criticism and grumbles when playing various parts. However, brass bands are generally made up of people who want to play and there is little time spent on theory or the concepts of how it all fits together. This is not a bad thing, because as a band member I go along to play so why shouldn't others. We have a few juniors (and some seniors) who are experimenting with arranging (a lot easier with the new software) and it is interesting (and good) to see their approach. There appears to be a need for a fairly basic manual on arranging for brass - How do you set up the rhythm engine, What are acceptable ranges for the various parts, What tonal colours are produced by various instrument combinations, What loadings or instrument combinations are required to produce dominant melody lines, What are the sound effects of consecutive fifths or fourths, Why use a sharp key instead of a flat key, etcetera. The answers to these questions are generally found from experience which takes time - something we now have little of. Perhaps someone will come up with a basic manual one day that brass players could read and even if not intending to arrange or compose, get some insight into how it is generally done. Me, I don't have the time.:) TiBaR Bairnsdale or the Bush --
