Merry Xmas all! Anyone agree that the Horovitz Sinfonietta is a superb choice as a test piece? It is full of ensemble playing, dynamics, contrasts, mixed sectional playing and not too much percussionist - what a dream choice. No one instrument is singled out and there is not much work needed in interpretating the music, as there are so many articulations and so many markings. There is so much that can be brought out in the piece that it puts aside the fact that it is not a very nice piece to listen to, and that the third movement sounds like the 'Old El Paso' advert! There's nothing worse for a conductor than playing a piece which showcases principal players too much. Well done NCC!
