HI, Douglas! I guess that I would have to ask what position he will be playing with your band. If he is going to play 2nd or 3rd cornet, I would recommend a larger mouthpiece than he is currently playing, like a Wick 2 or 4. If he is going to play front row solo cornet, then maybe a 2B or 4B would be good for him. I, personally, play a 2B in the front row of the Illinois Brass Band, as does one of the other front row cornets (my wife). We do play Bach 1 or 1 1/2 size (or larger) rims on our trumpet mouthpieces for orchestral work, so that should also be taken into account. Otherwise, a Wick 5 should be about the same rim in a cornet mouthpiece. Hope that helps! Guy Clark Illinois Brass Band (USA) --
