Well said Chris - I can't imagine it either. But on the other hand there are players who dislike contests, and if by dropping out they prevent the rest of the band from competing, well then, where's the harm in bringing others in - as long as they are not playing in the contest with any other band. If a band needs to bring in a player 2 weeks before the contest because of illness or any other reason, I see no problem in principle with that. The nearer the contest the less time the player has to learn the piece, so it works itself out in a way. I formed the view a few years ago when I was a contest sec that this whole registration system is archaic and ridiculous. It wrongly assumes everyone is a potential cheat and puts lots of unnecessary effort and worry on contest secs just when they need to concentrate on playing. I felt so sorry for City of Oxford a while ago. They got disqualified - not for cheating but just for having an unregistered player. Was there anything wrong with that morally? I wouldn't mind seeing the current system sped altogether. Have a few "rules" about what is expected by all means, but then put bands on trust to abide by them. If they cheat and use players from other bands they would soon be found out and reported to an investigatory panel. If the penalty for cheating was really harsh, like dropping down a section or two, or a ban on competing for 5 years, I am sure they would think twice about it. And just think of the effects of the bad publicity! What do others think of this idea? Peter Taylor Yiewsley & West Drayton Band --
