Years ago the Hamilton Philharmonic had a Bass trombone player who was only 4'10" tall. He could not reach 7th position so he had a short piece of butcher's twine (He was a Kosher Butcher) and he would throw out the slide and "flick" it back using the string. During a vigorous performance of the William tell storm scene the string broke and his slide flew off under the chairs of the cello section and out into the audience. He thereafter retired from playing.
