Once again we are that time of the year when several hundred bands in the country are upset with the quality of adjudicators at the area contests. There will be a small number of bands who think that they are the best adjudicators in the world. We as an organisation tend to let ourselves down, I feel, in that we accept that the people chosen to judge us at contests are beyond reproach and that they are all knowing where bands and test pieces are concerned. "Who tests the tester, what are their backgrounds,?" In every area that I can think of before you can sit in judgement of one person or group of people then an examiner has to pass some type of exam to prove that they have the knowledge and quality to pass comment on another's ability. I am one who has said "Well that's Banding for you." gone away and eventually got over the results good or bad. I put these thoughts down as after a Contest,a none playing person not attached to any band but who loves music said, "I find that your organisation is very amateurish in the way you decide who has played the best. Do they know what they are doing?" Isn't it time that we had a panel of adjudicators who have passed some type of exam and proved themselves to be worthy of the difficult task that is put on them. I suspect that on occasions our heroes listen to the test piece of the day on a C.D. played by a top section band who has spent several hours recording the music and then several more hours taking out and adding notes in when they were not correct and judge all the performances on that rendering rather than on the interpretation of the musical director and the bands on the day of the contest. Well soap box away now and I look forward to reading any other persons views, or ideas. --
