George I agree with alot of what you are saying - your right, this does go around every year! I cant really grumble too much, as my band was fortunate enough to have qualified for the previous three years (98-00). But sometimes adjudicators do get things wrong, and even though it may feel (and may well be) that some kind of injustice has been carried out, once it has, if it has, there is nothing that can be done. One of the suggestions that you make, I think is a valid one. In a contest, such as the area qualifying rounds there should be more than one adjudicator - like at the finals. This would help to eradicate any inconsistency that surrounds adjudication at any level within banding. I also think that as bands are pushing their own personal standards higher and higher year upon year, contests should also have adjudicators that reflect this, making sure that they are impartial in every aspect of their adjudication, taking into account the musical direction as well as the notes and the dynamics being played in the right place - I like to think that this happens most of the time. Being an adjudicator is an extremely hard job, and there are indeed some professionals out there doing an excellent job, but as in most organisations there are exceptions. I don't think that this issue will ever go away, as nobody out there like losing! but hopefully things will change for the better in the future, or else I fear that many bands out there will adopt the attitude, whether right or wrong of "what's the point!" I'll get down from my soapbox as well........ Andy Robinson Oldham Brass '97 --
