Hi Folks, I would like to post this Press release . The 1st Old Boys Association Silver Band are delighted to announce a uniq ue sponsorship deal with fast ferry operator, SeaCat. The band was formed in 1946 and has performed at the top level in both lo cal and national competition for a number of years. Based in Belfast, the ban d draws members from all sections of the community in Northern Ireland with some travelling up to 100 miles in a round trip to make regular Monday an d Thursday night rehearsals. In 2000, the band represented Northern Ireland at the prestigious Europea n Championships in Birmingham and had the honour of opening the competition with the World Premiere of Tallis Variations by Philip Sparke in front of a 2000 strong audience at the Symphony Hall. They also had the honour of be ing conducted by one of the foremost professional conductors in England, Rich ard Evans. This year the band will be competing twice outside Northern Ireland =96 q uite an undertaking for an amateur subscription only band. On May 4th, the ban d will be competing in the Senior Cup contest at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. Victory in this competition will ensure an invitation to compe te in the much sought after Grand Shield held each year which is one of the UK=92 s premier brass band competitions. =93 The announcement of the sponsorship deal from SeaCat has given the ba nd a huge boost. Sponsorship is taken for granted with our adversaries in Engl and and Scotland, but this is the first deal of its kind for a Northern Irela nd band since the late 1970=92s. The additional funds will provide towards t he purchase of new instruments and subsidise travel costs to compete against the higher class of brass bands in England, Scotland and Wales. Without this, it is unlikely that the band could even have considered two trips t o the UK in 2001. The Belfast-Heysham SeaCat service allows us to travel to the Blackpool competition without the inconvenience of the previous use o f Scottish ferry transport =96 allowing us to arrive refreshed and ready to compete=94 said Chairman, Morris Cameron. Hot on the heels of the trip to Blackpool is a second competition in SeaC at=92 s home Scottish port of Troon. The band has been specially invited to compete in the Land o=92 Burns competition in late August. =93This competition gives us the chance to concentrate throughout the sum mer on competing against he top brass bands in Scotland. The Belfast-Troon SeaCat service will allow the band and their supporters to make the trip to compete and return at their leisure the following evening. An overnight s tay in Troon will allow the chance to socialise with our Scottish counterpart s =96 competing is only a small part of this very sociable past time.
